32nd London Film Critics’ Circle Awards Winners

For my money, you can keep the Oscars or The Golden Globes, it’s the London Film Critics’ Circle Awards which are the most credible.  This year’s awards are voted for by over 120 UK critics, broadcasters and writers got it mostly spot on in terms of prizes.  It was presented by the Chairman Of The Critics’ Circle Jason Solomons who said, “Judging from the quality of films and performances honoured tonight, it is clear that the critics – who see every film, not just those with ‘awards campaigns’ behind them – have an increasingly influential voice in our awards races”.

Frankly, I couldn’t agree more.  The awards saw deserved wins from Michael Fassbender for Shame and Olivia Colman for Tyrannosaur (who unfortunately will probably go overlooked in the larger awards races despite, in my mind, being the best female performance of the year), and recognition for genuinely the best films of the year, shorn of the hype of Hollywood.

It’s probably no surprise that I agree with some of the choices (after all, I spend a lot of my time in similar company), but their top 10 looks quite a lot like my own. I didn’t get a chance to see Margaret or A Separation, so I’m afraid I can’t comment.  I’m also gutted I missed Weekend which supposedly brilliant.  Ah well, can’t win ‘em all.
