Deadline reports that Steven Spielberg is close to signing a deal to direct Warner Bros’s Biblical epic Gods And Kings. Apparently it’s going to be “a movie like a Braveheart-ish version of the Moses story” – They may take our lives but they’ll never take our freedom etc but probably with more sermonising and fewer kilts.

For those not familiar with the story, it’ll see baby Moses sent down the Nile, growing to leads the Jews out of slavery in Egypt before forming an army, receiving the Ten Commandments, parting the Red Sea and generally being hailed as an all-round megastar on his way to the Promised Land.

Film-goers might be familiar with the Cecile B DeMille version of the story The Ten Commandments which starred Charlton Heston but apparently Warners are looking for Spielberg to make a something more akin to Saving Private Ryan, ”There have been glossy versions of the Moses story but this would be a real warrior story,” said a conveniently unnamed “insider”.

The script has been co-written by Stuart Hazeldine (who also wrote Paradise Lost currently struggling with financial problems) and Michael Green (co-writer of Warner Bros’ Green Lantern).

Spielberg meanwhile has just finished up work on Lincoln and is currently working on Robopocalypse, so if he does sign, it’ll kick off sometime in 2013.
