Generally speaking, we’re not in favour of reboots here at OTB unless said reboot has something new to say or takes things in a different direction. What, after all, is the point in remaking a good film? Anyway, Paul Verhoeven’s cyborg classic Robocop is being retooled as we speak and star of the show Joel Kinnaman talked to MTV about director Jose Padilha’s new direction, insisting that it’s not a direct remake.

“Robocop is going to be a lot more human,” he said, “The first movie is one of my favourite movies. I love it. Of course, Verhoeven has that very special tone, and it’s not going to have that tone. It’s a re-imagination of it. There’s a lot of stuff from the original. There are some details and throwbacks, but this version is a much better acting piece, for Alex Murphy and especially when he is Robocop. It’s much more challenging.”

Well, challenging is one way of putting it. Apparently we’re actually going to be able to see Robocop’s eyes this time round which will mean that Kinnaman will certainly have to be more emotive.

“It’s not going to be jaw action. They’re still working on the suit and how it’s going to look, but the visor is going to be see-through,” he said. “You’re going to see his eyes.”

Sounds like they’re changing the aesthetic completely – whether that’s a good or a bad thing, we’ll have to see.
