Sabrina the Teenage Witch is to be rebooted as a superhero movie by Sony Pictures and will boast an origin story that follows a young girl coming to terms with her new-found superpower.

It’ll be written by Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (Die In A Gunfight), and produced by Real Steel producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford.  Mark Waters is the proposed director at the moment, but he might have to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.  Interestingly, it has the backing of Archie Comics’ Jon Goldwater, who will serve as executive producer.

Sabrina, which has its orgins in a 60s Archie comic, is probably best known to audiences these days from the series that ran for seven seasons in the mid-90s starring Melissa Joan Hart but it was also made into animated series in 1969, 1971 and 1999..

The tone of the movie is expected to be edgier (as everything is these days) with Sabrina’s talking black cat Salem still included in the script albeit as a transformed prince.  There’s no word on casting details for the role, but it’s likely to go to a unknown actress hoping that it’ll be a breakthrough role.

For those of you that don’t remember the MJH series, here are the intros to jog your memory.
